Cuba history

The recorded history of Cuba began on 28 October 1492, when Christopher Columbus sighted the island during his first voyage of discovery and claimed it for Spain. (This is still not certain and is an unresolved topic.)The island had been inhabited by Amerindian peoples known as the Taíno and Ciboney whose ancestors had come from South America several centuries before. The Taíno were farmers and the Ciboney (also written Siboney neo-Taino nations) were both farmers and hunter-gatherers; some have suggested that copper trade was significant and mainland artifacts have been found in proximal Taino cultures. The coast of Cuba was fully mapped by Sebastián de Ocampo in 1511, and in that year...

Historically, Cuba has had some of the highest rates of education and literacy in Latin America, both before and after the revolution. All education is free to Cuban citizens including university education. Private educational institutions are not permitted. School attendance is compulsory from ages six to sixteen and all students, regardless of age or gender, wear school uniforms with the color denoting grade level. Primary education lasts for six years, secondary education is divided into basic and pre-university education. Higher education is provided by universities, higher institutes, higher pedagogical institutes, and higher polytechnic institutes. The Cuban Ministry of Higher Education also...

Religion in Cuba

Cuba has a multitude of faiths reflecting the island’s diverse cultural elements. Catholicism, which was brought to the island by Spanish colonialists at the beginning of the 16th century, is the most prevalent professed faith. After the revolution, Cuba became an officially atheistic state and restricted religious practice. Since 1991, restrictions have been eased and, according to the National Catholic Observer, direct challenges by state institutions to the right to religion have all but disappeared, though the church still faces restrictions of written and electronic communication, and can only accept donations from state-approved funding sources.[46] The Roman Catholic Church is made up...

Flying rc airplanes and helicopters has become a hugely popular pastime in recent years, and more and more people are discovering the hobby all around the world. The letters RC stand for radio control, and refer to anything that is controlled by radio signals that are sent out from a transmitter to a receiver located inside the model. You'll often see rc referred to as 'remote control' but this is technically incorrect. Radio control is the correct term. In past years, RC airplanes and helicopters have been relatively expensive to buy, and you had to have a fair amount of model building knowledge to know how to assemble a kit from plans, not to mention knowing how to install and set up the radio...

For those of you who came to age during the 1960's, you probably vividly remember where you were when JFK was shot. For those of you who are cigar lovers, you probably vividly remember where you were when he made Cuban Cigars illegal. For over four decades, cigar smokers of America have been left without the ability to procure what's reputed to be the finest smokes on the market; they've been left empty -handed like a child who lost a favorite toy, a very luxurious, flavorful toy, in a neighbor's backyard. This has placed cigar lovers in perpetual wonderment, asking why they are missing out on one of life's greatest pleasures. The History Bent on a legacy of close economic and geographical relations...

It seems that every country has its own history when it comes to dogs and which dogs become the particular dog which has flourished in that country. Cuba is no exception, for it is the native country of the Havanese. Although the Havanese most probably originated with the Spanish settlers of Cuba many centuries ago as descendants of the Bichon Barbichon of Southern Spain , it became apparent after many years of development that the dog was destined to become a unique breed. Because at first there seemed to be many of these little toy dogs that carried a distinctive coat color of a deep brown similar in color to that of the cigar, it is theorized that the name "Havanese" came from the name "Havana...

The Ethnic Melting Pot

Posted by admin

America has long been known as an ethnic ‘melting pot’ in which individuals of all nations have melted into a new race of men. The country has compared to a big pot of soup which had bits of flavour from each different culture. In time they all blended together forming a new unique flavour. The basic ‘ingredients’ of this American mixture were immigrants who came to America from virtually every country in the world. Europe began sending colonists in the early 17th century but the massive immigration took place in the period from 1880 to 1920 when tens of millions of Europeans entered the United States. Black Americans, the largest ethnic minority in the country, were brought...

Some people never learn. On August 16th, in the EzineArticles.com's entry "Hey, I was only kidding!: Crossing the Line in Miami," it was reported how a stand-up comic made a dangerous mistake joking about the Cuban exile community's short fuse when it comes to questioning their interepretation of the "American Way." The response that night was nothing compared to what happened last night.Last night at the MiamiVision Comedy Club, he was attacked by an angry mob who didn't find him very funny at all. What began as a luke warm reception to some well-worn jokes in the sparsly filled club on the outskirts of Little Havana, quickly turned into a mob scene when the comic tried to get topical. Hours earlier...

Some people believe that there is more behind the legal immigration and illegal alien protests, boycotts, rallies and demonstrations. In fact since they were conducted on May Day, which is a Communist holiday some attribute this to the possibility that Cuba's Fidel Castro and even perhaps the President of Venezuela are behind some of these protests either financially or organizationally.Whether or not this is true may be beside the point, because if in the future the Venezuelan President decides to arm insurgents into the United States of America who pose as illegal aliens we could have a major problem and just like the MS 13 gangs, drug dealers and criminals we need protection against these...

Or would the energy being created merely disrupt the hurricane formation only to allow it to join forces later and cause an even bigger hurricane? Now, before all the scientists and weather meteorologists jump all over my scenario; I would like to point out that with high-energy lasers and large directional sound beams we may be able to start a circular rotation of wind sufficient enough to cause a hurricane like mini-tropical depression. Decaying paint-peeled buildings skirt the mayhem of the city's once grand avenues and plazas, all the way into Centro Habana. Tiny Russian Ladas scamper past enormous American Fords, Chevy's and Cadillac's of the 1950's. Amongst it all, the eclectic Havanians, hustle, bustle, linger and loiter through another day of post-Revolution life.Sweeping around a corner, you'll see rusty farmers aboard their hobbling donkeys amble past elderly rocking chair gossips, fanning themselves under oppressive midday heat. After picking up the bicycle on Thursday, I finally took my first ride on Friday afternoon through the beautiful residential area of Vedado. We had had a tropical downpour in the early afternoon, so the streets were a bit wet and it was about 4 pm or so by the time I got out. Of course, by that time, rush hour traffic had already started and there were thousands of people in the street, waiting for buses. The bicycle was a pretty new mountain bike, but it seems that all the gears and derailleurs were totally screwed up and I constantly had problems with the chain. 2 of the 3 chainrings in the front didn''t work at all and I had a pretty hard time getting along with the bike. But even more so than the...

After my walk through the Vedado neighbourhood, my friend Pedro came to pick me up since I had suggested a little excursion with a rental car to get to know the countryside. His wife and sister-in-law unfortunately coulnd't make it since their cousin was coming to town. La Habana can feel a little claustrophobic since the transportation options are limited and even a basic taxi ride to the Eastern Beaches (Playas del Este) is quite costly. And it's also nice to get away from the city, which can get rather congested and contaminated with car exhaust fumes from all the old vehicles. I can't imagine what the air must be like here in the summer when it is 35, 40 degrees Celsius with 80, 90 percent...

Every woman can think back to her childhood and reminisce about her favorite baby dolls. Perhaps her most treasured dolls were popular dolls with ever-changing outfits and accessories, dolls that had long tresses that could be brushed, or collectible porcelain dolls handed down for generations and displayed in a special case or on a special shelf. These treasured memories are the reason that collectible dolls are so popular today. Today's collectible dolls aren't necessarily antique dolls; more often, they're contemporary dolls that are, in essence, artist dolls - collectible dolls in limited editions that are carefully crafted by artists. Some of the most popular and treasured collectible dolls...

Cuba may seem like the country to which the cigar industry belongs, with citizens stopping just short of saluting a Havana Sun Grown instead of a flag. However, Cuba is not the only country with this distinction; it's not the sole place on an atlas known for putting cigars on the map. Lying east of Cuba is another nation known to be smoking hot when it comes to the world of cigars: The Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic, fittingly discovered by Mr. Cigar himself, Christopher Columbus, is the largest producer of cigars in the entire world, making it known as "Cigar Country" and leaving stogie lovers everywhere to search for their passports, book their flights, and come to a place that...

Nobody despises communism more than I, but the other day I wondered out loud why the U.S. does not consider opening normalized trade with the tiny island nation of Cuba. The fellow sitting next to me furrowed his brow as if I had said something obscene and hissed, "hey, in case you haven't noticed, Cuba is Communist." I responded that in case he hadn't noticed, "so is China and Vietnam" (with both of whom we are now positioning ourselves for permanent normal trade relations). I also added that since we were in the process of opening up relations with our new "friend" in the Mideast, Libya, perhaps it was time we consider the matter of Cuba. Indeed, as Fidel Castro begins his journey into the...

Spiral into the silent brook, to ride on the mermaids backs, to swim through reed and lilac, and chase through rocky cracks. We would race the lively glow-worm, like the jockeys of long ago, picnic among the josiper plants, swaying to and fro. This overflow of international crises dealing with America's operations are better defined as" US interventions".
